June 27th is National Sunglasses Day! 

That's right, there's a day for everything! Having a special day designated to celebrate just about anything may not be of importance to some of us, but allow me to make the case for National Sunglasses Day.

A trendy pair of sunglasses is very effective at helping you make a fashion statement. Lens treatments such as gradient tints and mirror finishes can add style and function to a good quality pair of sunglasses. Brown/amber polarized lenses can help you read the green when golfing or see fish just underneath the water surface when fishing. All of the above mentioned reasons are valuable, but what is the most important reason for having a good quality pair of sunglasses? In my opinion, it is the protection that a good quality pair of sunglasses provides for your eyes. How so? 

• By protecting the eyelids and conjunctiva (the protective membrane on the outside of the eye) from the increase in risk of developing cancer. 

• By preventing photokeratitis - a painful sunburn of the cornea. 

• By reducing the development/progression of cataracts.

• By preventing damage to light sensitive cells in the retina.
